International Education Week Events to be Held at UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama will host a variety of interesting events on campus during International Education Week, Nov. 18-22.

International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote programs preparing Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States.

The week’s theme is “Securing the Future through Educational and Cultural Exchanges.”

Here is a listing of some International Education Week events on the UA campus:

Monday, Nov. 18

  • International Education Women’s Panel — A panel of international women discussing the status of women throughout the world, Ferguson Forum, 10 a.m.-noon, sponsored by Women’s Resource Center
  • Islamic Art and Information Table, Ferguson Center, sponsored by International Student Association (ISA)
  • UA Libraries is sponsoring the display, “Take Time to Enjoy the International Books and Databases of the UA Libraries,” in the Main Library featuring internationally focused books and databases of the UA Libraries through Friday, Nov. 22.
  • UA Museum of Natural History — Free talk, reception, 205 Smith Hall, 7-8 p.m. Dr. Christian Feest, professor of anthropology at the Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany, will discuss the reasons for the European fascination with Native American cultures and the unique opportunities available in Europe for students of Native American affairs

Tuesday, Nov. 19

  • Study Abroad/ Summer Programs Information Table, Ferguson Center (next to Starbucks), 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Capstone International Academic Programs
  • A well-known and beloved poet from India, Professor Nisar Ahmed, will be speaking on the second floor of Gorgas Library from 4-5 p.m. Ahmed writes in Kannada (one of the oldest Dravidian languages next to Sanskrit) which is predominant in the state of Karnataka. He is a retired professor of geology and has been lecturing recently in the United States.
  • ISA Film Series, “The 400 Blows” from France, Ferguson Center Theatre, 7:30 p.m. Show is repeated on Wednesday, Nov. 20, and Thursday, Nov. 21, same time and location.

Wednesday, Nov. 20

  • Brown Bag Luncheon, speaker Dr. David Funk, UA director of MBA programs at Manderson Graduate School, “Impact of International Students,” 204B Ferguson, noon-1:30 p.m., sponsored by International Education Committee
  • Introducing the UA Japan Culture and Information Center, display table and information booth, Ferguson Center, 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., sponsored by UA Japan Program
  • Islamic Art and Information Table, Ferguson Center, sponsored by International Student Association (ISA)

Thursday, Nov. 21

  • Fulbright workshop, Ferguson Forum, 1:15-3:15 p.m., Dr. Marilyn Emplaincourt, sponsored by Capstone International Center
  • Capstone International Center Guest Speaker, speaker-Ms. Beryl Ratzer, Israeli historian, journalist and travel guide and author of “A Historical Tour of the Holy Land,” speech titled “Israel, The Land I live In: Past, Present, and Future,” 135 BB Comer Hall, 3-4 p.m.
  • Japanese Drum Performance, by Nozomi Taiko, 11-11:45 a.m., front of Ferguson Center, sponsored by JVC, Tuscaloosa Sister Cities Commission and the Japan-America Society of Alabama. The group, Nozomi Taiko is comprised of UA faculty, staff and students.

Friday, Nov. 22

  • Tailgate for Diversity, sponsored by the SGA’s diversity committee, the Common Ground
