Army ROTC Alpine Tower to be at UA Nov. 8-9

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Army ROTC will bring a giant alpine tower to the University campus as part of a special college tour Friday-Saturday, Nov. 8-9.

Students will be allowed to test their skills on the tower free of charge beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8. The alpine tower will be located on campus in front of Moore Hall (at the corner of 6th Avenue and University Boulevard).

Col. Rod Davis, national director of marketing and public affairs for Army ROTC, said the tower attracts potential students. “We expect the tower to be a huge success in Tuscaloosa. Not only is it a lot of fun, but it’s perfect for attracting the type of young man or woman we’re after. We’re looking for scholar-athlete-leaders from the University to enroll in Army ROTC,” Davis said.

Davis said the tower has helped students become more aware of Army ROTC opportunities on university campuses. It also gives them information about “what it means to be an officer.”

The tower was first introduced at spring break in Panama City, Fla., and South Padre Island, Texas.

“It’s one of several new ways in which we are getting the word out,” Davis said, adding, “They (students) aren’t familiar with the tremendous benefits of Army ROTC and being an officer — the respect, leadership and management experience — that will serve them well both in and out of the military. ROTC is absolutely the best leadership course in America and we offer a great financial incentive package. We have so many great alumni, including Gen. Colin Powell and Sam Walton of Wal-Mart.”

Army ROTC representatives will be on hand to assist those interested in taking the challenge and to answer questions about the program. Free T-shirts, hats and other items will be offered to those who negotiate the tower.
