UA English Honor Society Students Win Scholarships at National Conference

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Sixteen members of The University of Alabama chapter of Sigma Tau Delta recently participated in the 2002 Convention of the International English Honor Society in Boise, Idaho.

Several UA students won awards and scholarships at the conference. Each of the 598 chapters could nominate one student for each category.

Michel Pieter Aaij of Tuscaloosa won a $200 Scholarly Paper Award for the best piece presented by a Sigma Tau Delta member at a non-Sigma Tau Delta conference and a $50 President’s Award for Best Convention Presentation in the Analytical Essay category.

Jessica Lorien Raley of Marietta, Ga., won one of two $2,000 Senior Scholarships. This highly competitive scholarship supports the student’s continued study in English.

Sally Ann Wiggins of Tuscaloosa won a $500 Graduate Scholarship. One of her critical essays also appeared in the 2002 Rectangle, Sigma Tau Delta’s literary journal.

Gina Rae Newsom of Tiplersville, Miss., won one of three $100 awards for Best Essay on the convention’s theme, Challenging Frontiers.

Matt Maki of Tuscaloosa was a finalist for the President’s Award for Best Convention Presentation in Poetry.

Christina Rauh of Herndon, Va., won the $750 Herbert Hughes Award, which goes to the best short story published in the Rectangle.
