Scholarship Applications Available to High School Journalists via APA and UA-Based ASPA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama Press Association Journalism Foundation announces the establishment of the $2,500 J.B. Stevenson Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded Feb. 23 to an Alabama high school journalist at the Alabama Scholastic Press Association state convention in Tuscaloosa.

The scholarship is named in memory of J.B. Stevenson, son of John W. and Rachelle Stevenson, of The Randolph Leader in Roanoke, Ala. J.B. Stevenson was 17 years old in 1997 when he was killed in an automobile accident. He had grown up in the newsroom of his family’s community newspaper and attended several state press association meetings and conferences where he befriended many of the state’s editors. His father, John W. Stevenson, is former president of the Alabama Press Association.

High school seniors may apply for the scholarship through the Alabama Scholastic Press Association, based at The University of Alabama. Application materials must include an official entry form, a portfolio of published work, an essay, letters of recommendation and an official transcript. The portfolio must be postmarked by Feb. 1.
