UA Student Named Winner of National Award in Delta Zeta Sorority

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama student Jessica Brooks was recently named one of the 2001 Florence Hood Miner Award recipients by Delta Zeta Sorority’s National Council.

Brooks, a native of Birmingham (zip code 35223), is a public relations major and dance performance minor at UA. She serves as the Student Government Association’s press secretary and is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and XXXI, an honorary that recognizes the 31 most outstanding senior women on campus. In addition to receiving the Florence Hood Miner Award, Brooks was also named Order of Omega’s Most Outstanding Sophomore in 2000.

The Florence Hood Miner Award is given annually to members of Delta Zeta who are in their junior year and have made the greatest contributions to their college chapter and Delta Zeta through outstanding leadership on campus while maintaining a good academic record. The recipients are exemplary representatives of Delta Zeta’s standards of excellence in leadership, scholarship, community service and fostering the values of sisterhood.

The award is named after national historian Florence Hood Miner and is in recognition of her service as national vice president, editor of The LAMP of Delta Zeta and many other national offices. Delta Zeta sorority was founded on Miami University’s campus in Oxford, Ohio, in 1902. The sorority has more than 140,000 alumnae and collegiate members in the United States and Canada. The Delta Zeta Foundation, a non-profit organization, makes possible the gifts and support for scholarships, leadership, philanthropy and education.
