Novelist Inman Majors and Poet Janet McAdams to Read as Part of Bankhead Writers Series at UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Writers Inman Majors and Janet McAdams will read from their work on Thursday, Nov. 29, at 7:30 p.m., in 205 Smith Hall, as part of this year’s Bankhead Visiting Writers Series at The University of Alabama. The event is free and open to the public.

Majors and McAdams are both UA graduates.

Majors’ first novel, “Swimming in Sky,” has been widely acclaimed. The novel explores a 20-something’s reading of fractured family relationships, the raveling edges of friendships, and what’s left of traditional spirituality in his life. Majors, a sixth-generation Tennessean, now lives in Tullahoma, Tenn., and is instructor of English at Motlow State Community College. He received his master’s of fine arts in creative writing from UA in 1994.

McAdams’ first book of poetry, “The Island of Lost Luggage,” won the 1999 First Book Awards competition of the Native Writers’ Circle of the Americas. McAdams’ poetry has appeared in numerous literary journals, magazines, and anthologies and has earned her fellowships from both the Alabama and the Georgia state arts councils. She received a doctorate in comparative literature from Emory University and a master’s of fine arts in creative writing from UA. McAdams is an Alabama native and presently teaches Native American literature and creative writing at the University of Oklahoma.

The Bankhead Visiting Writers Series is made possible by an endowment from the Bankhead Foundation, the UA program in creative writing, the department of English, and the College of Arts and Sciences. For more information, please contact the creative writing program at 205/348-0766.
