UA to Hold Annual Homecoming Week Oct. 28-Nov. 3

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Fireworks, entertainment, lawn decorations, a parade and pep rally are all part of The University of Alabama tradition of celebrating Homecoming Week, scheduled this year for Oct. 28-Nov. 3.

The theme for Homecoming Week 2001 is “Writ in Crimson Flame.”

The kickoff for the celebration begins with the 13th annual “Roll Tide Run” on Sunday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m. The week will end with the main event, the UA football game against LSU at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 2:30 p.m.

On Monday, Oct. 29, student organizations can participate in “Paint the Town Red,” where local businesses on the Strip are decorated with designs in crimson and white paint.

The Homecoming Queen election will be held Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 9 a.m.-10 p.m. with students able to use Internet voting for the first time. Students can access voting from any computer by going to the UA home page www.ua.edu.

The queen will be announced at the pep rally on Friday night. UA President Andrew Sorensen will crown the queen during the halftime show at the football game.

A pool shoot contest, as well as entertainment, will be held in the Ferguson Center Pool Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 8 p.m.

On Thursday night, a choreography competition will take place at 7 p.m. in Riverside Amphitheater. The winners of the competition will perform at Homecoming on the Quad on Saturday.

The hall decoration and banner contest judging will take place Thursday afternoon.

Events scheduled for Friday, Nov. 2, include the Quad games, which will begin at 1 p.m. The Road and River Relay begins at 2 p.m. at Denny Chimes. The judging of the lawn decorations and “Paint the Town Red” competition will begin at 1 p.m.

The traditional bonfire and fireworks extravaganza will follow the pep rally, which begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, on the Quad. The pep rally will include the Crimson Tide football team, cheerleaders, students, alumni and guest speakers.

Immediately following the bonfire on the Quad, University Programs will present the musical entertainment of George Clinton, performing live on the Quad in a free concert.

This year, golf legend Jerry Pate will serve as the grand marshal for the homecoming parade, which is set for 9 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 3. The parade route will begin in downtown Tuscaloosa, proceed down University Boulevard and conclude at the Russell Student Health Center.

Pate, who played golf at UA in the early 1970s, returned to the University to complete his degree earlier this year. He currently is the chairman of the Jerry Pate Turf and Irrigation Inc. Pate has competed in more than 400 professional golf tournaments and has been a competitor and member of the PGA Tour since 1975. Early in his career Pate garnered eight Tour victories and seven foreign wins. In 1976, he won the U.S. Open. Pate also has worked as a golf commentator for ABC Sports, CBS Sports and BBC Sports London.

Fans of all ages can also find entertainment at Homecoming on the Quad, Saturday, Nov. 3, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. On Saturday, several colleges and schools at the University will host breakfasts or receptions and will be showcased under individual tents around the “Big Top” on the Quad.
