Former UA Homecoming Queens Return to Campus Nov. 2-3

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Some 45 University of Alabama homecoming queens are returning to the Capstone for a reunion during UA’s 2001 Homecoming weekend Nov. 2-3.

Gloria Ann Terry Pennington of Huntsville, who was homecoming queen at UA in 1939, and MarLa Sayers of Tuscaloosa, the 1958 queen (and wife of Dr. Roger Sayers, past UA president), are co-chairs of the first reunion to honor homecoming queens.

The returning queens plan to discuss having a special garden in their honor in the Crimson Promenade.

On Friday, Nov. 2, at 3 p.m. there will be a reception at the University Club for the former queens and their escorts. At 5:30 p.m., they will attend the Homecoming Pep Rally reception at the Natural History Museum in Smith Hall. There will be a group introduction of the queens during the Homecoming Pep Rally on the Quad at 7 p.m.

The reuniting homecoming queens will participate in the UA Homecoming Parade on Saturday, Nov. 3.

They will meet for pre-game festivities and a group photograph at the President’s Mansion before kick-off. The queens also will be introduced during the half-time show of the UA football game against LSU in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

The 45 former queens are coming from Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Mississippi, California, Colorado, Oklahoma, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., Georgia, Illinois, Ohio, Texas and Washington.
