Author Peter Balakian to Read as Part of Bankhead Writers Series at UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Author Peter Balakian will read from his work on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m., in 205 Smith Hall, as part of this year’s Bankhead Visiting Writers Series at The University of Alabama. The event is free and open to the public.

Balakian is the author of four books of poems, most recently “June-Tree: New and Selected Poems, 1974-2000.” His acclaimed memoir, “Black Dog of Fate: The Legacy of Genocide in an Armenian Family,” was awarded the 1998 PEN/Martha Albrand Prize for best memoir. “Black Dog of Fate” was a New York Times Notable Book of 1997 and a Best Book of the Year for the “Los Angeles Times,” Publisher’s Weekly, and Library Journal. Balakian is professor of English at Colgate University, where he teaches American literature, creative writing, and a course on the Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust. He is the current director of Colgate’s new Center for the Study of Ethics and World Societies. He lives in Hamilton, New York, with his wife and children.
