UA Greek System Kicks of New Philanthropy Project

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Greek system at The University of Alabama recently began “Greek Links,” a new, yearlong philanthropy project.

UA students are hoping to raise $200,000 for local philanthropy efforts with Greek Links projects. Seventy percent of the proceeds will go to Habitat for Humanity’s fund for new homes for victims of last year’s tornadoes in the Tuscaloosa area. Children’s Hospital in Birmingham will also receive part of this 70 percent.

Fifteen percent of the money collected will go to participating fraternities and sororities national philanthropies. Some examples of national philanthropies are the Ronald McDonald House and breast cancer awareness programs. Another 15 percent will be distributed by the Greek system to additional charitable designations.

Greek Links is a division of Champion Golf Events of Birmingham, a company with more than 11 years of experience of helping organizations raise money for charitable organizations across the country.

Two SEC schools, MSU and the University of Florida, are challenging UA students in the Greek Links project to see who can raise the most money.

Sept. 20 marked the beginning of the first phase of UA’s Greek Links project. New members of the Greek system will participate in fund raising throughout phase one.

The first phase will end the weekend of the Alabama vs. MSU football game on Nov. 10.

The second phase of Greek Links will begin in February 2002 and will involve both active members and new members of UA’s fraternities and sororities. It will conclude with a golf tournament on March 8.
