UA’s Sarah Moody Gallery of Art to Present: Samuel Mockbee: Visiting Lecturer Series

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Sarah Moody Gallery of Art within The University of Alabama’s College of Arts and Sciences will present guest lecturer Samuel Mockbee, as part of the department of art’s Visiting Lecture Series, Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m., in 203 Garland Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

An architect and artist, Mockbee serves as the Wiatt Distinguished Professor of Architecture at Auburn University and is co-founder and co-director of the Auburn University Rural Studio in Newburn, Ala.

Mockbee has committed his talents as an architect and artist to revealing and changing the living situation of many poverty level Alabamians in Hale County. The Rural Studio program allows students to participate as contributing citizens of Hale County, facing residential problems first-hand and using innovative design to solve them. Alongside the Rural Studio, Mockbee’s art reaches out and exposes the personal and professional relationship he has with the area.

His professional efforts have brought marked national recognition, including the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellow for 2000; the Apgar Award for Excellence from the National Building Museum, Washington, DC; as well as exhibition opportunities at The Museum of Modern Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian/Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, New York. Funding support for the lecture comes from the College of Arts and Sciences Anonymous Lectureship Fund at The University of Alabama.
