Alabama Scholastic Press Association to Present Four High School Journalism Workshops

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama Scholastic Press Association will present high school journalism workshops to students on four separate college campuses across Alabama.

The ASPA traveling team will offer workshops as follows:

Monday, Sept. 17, Huntsville, University of Alabama-Huntsville – University Center

Tuesday, Sept. 18, Opelika, Southern Union Community College – Student Center

Wednesday, Sept. 19, Mobile, University of South Alabama – University Center

Thursday, Sept. 20, Tuscaloosa, The University of Alabama – Ferguson Center

The workshop costs $10 per student or adviser. ASPA will waive the registration fee for each journalism instructor who brings 10 or more students. Registration begins at 8 a.m. at each site, and sessions end daily at 2 p.m.

Yearbook, newspaper, literary magazine and photography classes will be offered at all locations, but broadcast sessions will also be offered in Tuscaloosa and Huntsville.

This year’s featured speakers will include:

Carol Lange of Reston, Va., who was the 1991 National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year. She has advised in the production of 26 magazines and 13 yearbooks. These publications have received the National Scholastic Press Association Pacemaker award and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s gold and silver crowns. She has recently completed freelance work for The Washington Post, the First Amendment Center and the Newseum.

Alice Klement of New York City, who has reported and edited stories for community newspapers in Chicago, a legal weekly in Washington, a weekly in Alaska, a metropolitan daily in Miami, and a wire service in New York. She has taught journalism courses at universities in the United States and abroad, and co-edited two textbooks.

Bruce Watterson of Rome, Ga., who is assistant vice president for public relations at Shorter College. Watterson has more than 20 years of experience as a public/private school university instructor and publications adviser. A popular workshop speaker in more than 30 states, Watterson is also contributing editor and writer for scholastic and journalistic publications and desktop journals.
