UA’s Isom Named Vice President Of College Media Advisers Inc

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Paul Isom, director of the Office of Student Media at The University of Alabama, was recently elected vice president of College Media Advisers Inc.

CMA represents the people who advise the nation’s collegiate newspapers, yearbooks, magazines and electronic media; there are more than 700 members coast-to-coast.

Isom is a native of Huntsville and has a bachelor’s degree in journalism (1986) and master’s degree in communication (1994) from UA. He has worked at four state newspapers, including The Daily Sentinel (Scottsboro), The Times Daily (Florence), The Tuscaloosa News and The Birmingham News. Isom has worked professionally as a news, sports and features reporter, copy editor, page designer and features editor.
Isom has been director of the UA Office of Student Media since 1998. The office oversees the production of The Crimson White, the Corolla yearbook, 90.7 WVUA-FM, The Black Warrior Review literary magazine, Marr’s Field Journal literary magazine and the Southern Historian journal of Southern history. The state’s high school journalism outreach program, the Alabama Scholastic Press Association, also operates within the OSM.

Isom also advises the editorial staffs of The Crimson White, the Corolla and the Marr’s Field Journal and teaches Journalism 311, News Reporting and Writing.

Before coming to UA, Isom previously advised student newspapers, magazines and yearbooks at Northeast Louisiana University and UAB and taught journalism at UAB and Murray State University in Kentucky.

Isom has been a member of College Media Advisers Inc., since 1994. He is serving his second year as chair of the photojournalism committee. He is responsible for programming photojournalism sessions for CMA conventions and was awarded a CMA Board of Directors’ Citation for most improved convention sessions after the fall 2000 convention in Washington, D.C. Presenters in his session included three photographers with six Pulitzer Prizes among them and the director of photography for the White House.
