E. Culpepper Clark Named Sayers Award Winner At UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. E. Culpepper “Cully” Clark, dean of the College of Communication and Information Sciences at The University of Alabama, has been presented with the E. Roger Sayers Endowed Distinguished Service Award.

Presentation of the award was made during UA President Andrew Sorensen’s semester address to faculty and staff on May 8.

The award was created in 1996 by members of the UA President’s Cabinet and the National Alumni Association to recognize faculty and exempt administrative personnel who have performed in an exemplary manner to further the mission of the University. It is named in honor of E. Roger Sayers, who served as UA president from 1988-1996.

“Nothing means as much to me as to get this award named in honor of Dr. Sayers,” said Clark, who served as top executive assistant to Sayers from 1990-1996.

Clark, who holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Emory University, and a doctorate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been dean of the College of Communication and Information Sciences since 1996. He also serves as professor of communication studies within the College.

“I know of no individual who has contributed to the advancement of The University of Alabama’s mission in so many different roles as Dean Clark has,” said Dr. Cathy Randall, director of UA’s Honors Programs.

“To me, Cully personifies distinguished service to The University of Alabama, and he has held the banner high over the years in more ways than any one person can possibly know,” added Dr. Jennings Bryant, director of the Institute for Communication Research within C&IS.

C&IS is among the nation’s largest and most prestigious communication colleges, having graduated more than 12,000 students. Communication graduates have won four of the six Pulitzer Prizes awarded to UA alumni, and the College is home to this year’s national championship student advertising competition team and the forensic team, which, this year, earned it’s 14th team national title.
