Diabetes Support Group To Meet Friday At UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Adults with Type II diabetes are invited to join a support group that is meeting Friday, May 11, from noon-1 p.m. at the Capstone Medical Center west conference room on The University of Alabama campus.

Margaret P. Garner, director of nutrition education and services at the Capstone Medical Center and assistant professor in the UA College of Community Health Sciences (CCHS) department of family medicine, will discuss “Carbohydrate Counting Using Food Labels.” Participants are asked to bring food labels or empty boxes.

The group will determine its own meeting schedule, but “Capstone Medical Center wants to enhance opportunities for our patients to succeed at self-management and health risk reduction,” according to Garner, a sponsor of the support group.

Capstone Medical Center doctors, nurses, the nutritionist and social worker will be available as needed to provide patient education at regular intervals. Please call Gwen Wade at 205/348-2880 for more information on the support group.

CCHS is a clinical branch campus of the UA School of Medicine, whose central campus is in Birmingham. CCHS emphasizes family practice and other primary care disciplines, as well as providing education for third- and fourth-year medical students. CCHS also trains family physicians in a three-year Family Practice Residency Program, which provides medical service to the community through UA’s Capstone Medical Center and DCH Regional Medical Center.
