Sarah Moody Gallery Of Art To Present “Chasing Napoleon”

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Sarah Moody Gallery of Art at The University of Alabama will present artist Tony Scherman’s “Chasing Napoleon” exhibit April 6 through May 20.

The public is also invited to a free opening-day reception on Friday, April 6, from 6-8 p.m., in 103 Garland Hall.

“Chasing Napoleon” features 24 large-scale, encaustic paintings (meaning that the painting medium is pigmented wax — a very early means of painting dating back to the Etruscans) by Toronto-based artist Scherman. Through his research of historical portraits, paintings and illustrations, Scherman constructs and chronicles the life of Napoleon Bonaparte and his place in the history of France.

Scherman’s work is held by the Library of Congress, London’s Royal College of Art, Montreal’s Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Microsoft Corporation, among others. “Chasing Napoleon” is originated by F.R.A.C., Ile de France at the Couvet des Courdeliers, St. Germain. It is curated by Bernard Goy, and is circulated by Curatorial Assistance Inc. — Los Angeles.

Funding support for the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art is provided by the department of art and UA’s College of Arts and Sciences.

The gallery is located in 103 Garland Hall on the UA campus. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.— 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 2-5 p.m. on Sundays. For more information on the gallery or upcoming exhibits, call 205/348-1890.
