Journal Editor To Discuss Teacher Testing At Annual Curtis Lecture March 22 At UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. Marilyn Cochran-Smith, editor of the Journal of Teacher Education, will present “Outputs, Outcomes, and Results: The New Orthodoxy in Teacher Education” for the 2001 James P. Curtis Distinguished Lecture Thursday, March 22 at 7 p.m.in the Rast Room of the Bryant Conference Center on The University of Alabama campus.

Cochran-Smith will discuss the need to debate today’s heavy emphasis on teacher education outcomes. “Now more than ever, we need debate about outcomes, especially within the current context of heightened public criticism of teaching and teacher education, highly politicized discussions about high standards, and the increasing privatization of American schooling,” said Cochran-Smith, whose publication is the leading voice for the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education.

In addition to her editor duties, Cochran-Smith also serves on the faculty of the Lynch School of Education at Boston College. She has written and lectured extensively on issues of race, diversity, and social justice in teaching and teacher education. For the past 20 years she has worked with education professionals to understand and improve urban teaching.

This presentation is sponsored by the College of Education in conjunction with its alumni association, the Capstone College of Education Society. A buffet reception will follow. Admission is free to both events, and the general public is invited to attend.
