A University of Alabama metallurgical and materials engineering professor was chosen as the first American recipient of the Academic Achievement Award of the Ceramic Society of Japan.

Dr. Richard C. “Dick” Bradt was recognized for his research on the behavior of brittleness and plasticity of ceramics as related to the crystal structure and microstructure.

The Ceramic Society of Japan deals with the applied chemistry and physics of technical ceramics, such as those with special optical, electrical, mechanical and magnetic properties. Many of these types of ceramics are found inside televisions and computers.
