UA’s College Of Arts And Sciences Appoints New Associate Deans

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Two University of Alabama faculty members have been appointed associate deans in the College of Arts and Sciences. Jonathan Michaelsen, associate professor in the department of theatre and dance; and Dr. Carmen Taylor, associate professor in the department of communicative disorders, were appointed by College Dean Robert F. Olin.

Michaelsen will represent the College’s humanities and fine arts programs and lead the College’s technology and faculty development initiatives. Taylor will represent the social sciences and head the areas of personnel, diversity, and affirmative action.

Michaelsen and Taylor are filling positions recently vacated.

“Professors Michaelsen and Taylor bring to the Office of the Dean strong academic records, excellent organizational skills, and keen understanding of the special mission of the liberal arts in the University. We look forward to Jonathan and Carmen applying their considerable talents to their areas of management and to enthusiastically serving the academic disciplines they represent,” said Olin.

Michaelsen has served as associate professor and head of the acting program in the department of theatre and dance for 11 years. An accomplished actor and director, Michaelsen’s UA productions have garnered national and regional recognition. His production of “Southern Girls” by Dura Temple and Sherri Bailey was selected as one of the top college productions in the country by the American College Theatre Festival in 1992. Michaelsen currently serves on the Executive Board of the Southeastern Theatre Conference, one of the nation’s largest theatre organizations. His professional acting credits include the Okoboji Summer Theatre, Spirit Lake, Iowa; the Arkansas Repertory Theatre, Little Rock; the Illinois Shakespeare Festival, Bloomington/Normal; the Columbus Ensemble Theatre, Columbus, Ohio; and the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Boulder. He is a native of Santa Barbara, Calif., and holds a bachelor of arts degree from the University of California at Irvine and a master of fine arts from Florida State University/Asolo Conservatory.
