UA Golden Key Society Receives International Award

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama chapter of the Golden Key Honor Society recently received the Key Chapter Award at this year’s international meeting of the society in Los Angeles.

The UA group, advised by Lynn Hamric, administrative secretary in the mechanical engineering department, was one of only 17 chapters out of the 300 in the world to receive an award at the international meeting. The Key Chapter Award is presented to the chapter that best meets and surpasses the standards of the honor society’s yearly requirements. Criteria include providing one semester of a drug awareness program, numerous service projects, and submission of two articles per year to the honor society’s magazine.

Students from across the globe gather at the annual international meeting, attending not only the awards ceremony, but also workshops that teach them how to better handle their university chapter.

Hamric, UA Golden Key advisor since 1997, hosted a diversity workshop during the international meeting. The goal of the workshop was to help people recognize how not to offend other nationalities and how to be accepting of different cultures, she said.

“One of the best aspects of being a member of Golden Key is the opportunity to build life-long friendships,” said Hamric. “It’s the perfect way for students to polish an otherwise strictly academic resume by showing how well rounded they are in community service projects.”

Among other awards that the UA chapter of Golden key has received is Best Project in 1999, for collecting over 100 teddy bears for Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue to distribute to children who have lost their home in a fire, or whose parents have been injured by a fire. Other awards include the 1999 and 2000 Regional Star Chapter award.

The UA Chapter will host this year’s regional Golden Key conference at the University in March 2001.
