South African University Administrator to Study how UA Manages Diversity Issues

Ezekiel Moraka, an administrator at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, will visit The University of Alabama Nov. 6-7 to study how UA manages diversity on campus. UA is one of several American universities Moraka plans to visit during a month-long trip to the United States.

Moraka notes that South African universities are “still grappling with the demons of apartheid” and that “the perception of celebrating diversity has still to be instilled in the minds of students.” At UA, Moraka will meet with Student Affairs administrators and staff as well as others involved with diversity programs campus-wide. He will focus on learning more about managing diversity issues on campus, developing programs to facilitate change, conflict resolution and structures of student affairs divisions.

Moraka says he hopes to learn from institutions like UA that have dealt with diversity issues over the years. “It is vitally important that we learn from these institutions what the best methods are for use in South Africa to be able to manage both diversity and the phenomenal changes occurring at our institutions,” he said.

Moraka will be available for media interviews from 10:30-11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 6, in 275 Rose Administration Building.
