Kendrick Receives Top Faculty Award In UA’s HES

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ­ Dr. Olivia Kendrick, University of Alabama associate professor of human nutrition and hospitality management, was recently named the 2000 recipient of the Joseph S. Rowland Teaching Excellence Award, the top faculty award given in UA’s College of Human Environmental Sciences (HES).

The Rowland Award, named in honor of HES professor emeritus Dr. Joe Rowland, is chosen through nominations from HES students and faculty.

A member of the UA faculty since 1984, Kendrick served as chair of the human nutrition and hospitality management department from 1989 to 1994. She has been in her current faculty position since 1994.

Kendrick’s area of research expertise is in community nutrition with special emphasis on the elderly and women. Her research focus has included osteoporosis, government nutrition programs, and nutrition counseling.

Her professional and scientific memberships include the American Dietetic Association, the Alabama Dietetic Association, and the American Home Economics Association. She has served on the Alabama Osteoporosis Task Force; and the editorial boards of the American Journal of Health Studies and the Dietitian’s Patient Education Manual.

Before coming to the Tuscaloosa campus, she worked on the Council on Aging in San Jose, Calif., and Auburn University’s Commission on Aging Project. Kendrick holds both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s from Auburn University; an M.P.A. from Auburn University in Montgomery; and a doctorate in public health from the University of California, Berkeley.
