Young English Musicians To Particpate In UA Homecoming, Other Activities

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Twenty-six youngsters from Essex County, England, will visit The University of Alabama during a one-week stay in the United States, Oct. 21-28.

These Brentwood School students, trained in choral singing and in a number of musical instruments, will visit a UA Million Dollar Band practice on Thursday, Oct. 26, and will attend UA’s homecoming pep rally, bonfire and fireworks show the following night.

John Chambers, director of administration in UA’s graduate school, is a native of Essex County, England, and an alumnus of Brentwood School. Chambers is among those hosting the visitors.

As guests of Tuscaloosa’s Christ Episcopal Church Choir, the students will participate in a joint concert with the church’s choir on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 4 p.m. in the church’s parish hall. Selections will include both popular and sacred music. The children, who consider Dixieland jazz one of their specialties, will also perform for several groups of students at Tuscaloosa Academy during their visit.

In March, the Tuscaloosa church’s choir made a singing tour of English cathedrals and churches. The Brentwood School hosted the choir and performed a joint concert in St. Peter’s Church in South Weald.

Brentwood School is the largest private school in England, with more than 1,600 students.

While the Brentwood students and their four chaperones are in the U.S., they also plan to visit UA’s Moundville Archaeological Park, New Orleans, the space museum in Huntsville, and other area attractions.

The Oct. 22 choral concert to be held at Christ Episcopal Church, near the corner of 6th Street and Lurleen Wallace Blvd., in Tuscaloosa, is free and open to the public. For information about the concert, call 758-0927.
