UA African American Studies Program Presents Public Seminars In October

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. The African American Studies Program in the College of Arts and Sciences at The University of Alabama is presenting a series of free public seminars in October.

All sessions will take place on Tuesdays, in 30 ten Hoor Hall, from 12:30 2 p.m. For more information, contact Dr. Amilcar Shabazz, director of UA’s African American Studies Program, at 205/348-9766. Events and dates are as follows:

October 10: Cultural Studies in the Alabama Black Belt
Drs. Rose Gladney and Amilcar Shabazz, along with local Blues artist Debbie Bond, will discuss research into the African American contribution to music, theatre, literature and other fine and performing arts.

October 17: Public viewing of the film “A Question of Color”
Co-sponsored with UA’s department of women’s studies, a public viewing of the one-hour, award-winning documentary, will be followed by a discussion with the film’s director Kathe Sandler. The film confronts a painful and long taboo subject — the internalized prejudice afflicting many African Americans’ feelings about themselves and other black citizens.

October 24: Action Research & Grassroots Intervention
Drs. Martha Crowther, Rhoda Johnson and Cassandra Simon discuss their research on critical issues among Alabama’s African Americans, including topics such as grandparenting, breast cancer’s impact on families, and educational victories.

October 31: Slavery as a Problem & Continuing Struggle
UA historians, Drs. Lisa Dorr, Wythe Holt and Greg Dorr, discuss the problem of slavery in American life and how its contested meanings and enduring legacies act as a generator of continuous struggle within and among racial identity groups.
