Gulf Shores Student Named UA Homecoming Queen

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Amanda Ellis of Gulf Shores will be named homecoming queen at The University of Alabama’s traditional pep rally on Friday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. on the steps of Gorgas Library.

Ellis, a senior majoring in civil engineering, is a member of XXXI and the Anderson Society. She serves as president of Pi Beta Phi sorority, president pro-tempore of the SGA Senate and Cardinal Key president.

UA President Andrew Sorensen is scheduled to crown the homecoming queen during halftime of the homecoming football game between Alabama and Central Florida at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28. The court will also be presented along with the queen.

The other four members of the 2000 homecoming court are Jessica Carmichael of Oakman, LaDonna M. Carpenter of Huntsville, Joni Crenshaw of Meridian, Miss., and Holley Johnson of Birmingham (zip code 35243).

UA students selected the queen and her court from 24 candidates in a general campus election Tuesday, Oct. 24.

The Homecoming Choreography Contest also took place on Tuesday. Winners included: First Place-Zeta Tau Alpha, Second Place-Phi Mu, Third Place-Alpha Omicron Pi, Most Spirited-Phi Mu, Best Costumes-Alpha Chi Omega and Best Use of Theme-Zeta Tau Alpha.

Winners in several of UA’s annual homecoming events will also be announced during the pep rally on Friday night.

“Paint the Town Red” contest winners included: First Place-Circle K, Second Place-Chi Omega, and Third Place-Delta Delta Delta.

Lawn Decoration contest winners for this year included: First Place-Zeta Tau Alpha, Second Place-Phi Mu, Third Place-Alpha Chi Omega.

Quad Game winners included: First Place-Pi Beta Phi, Second Place-Alpha Chi Omega, Third Place-Phi Mu.

Judging for the contests was conducted by a panel of faculty, staff and alumni.
