Civil War Expert To Speak At UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A Civil War historian and author will speak publicly at The University of Alabama on Thursday, Oct. 12, at 4 p.m. in 251 ten Hoor Hall.

Dr. Gary W. Gallagher, the John L. Nau III Professor in the History of the American Civil War at the University of Virginia, will give a lecture titled “Robert E. Lee, Jubal A. Early, Douglas Southall Freeman, and Civil War History.”

The lecture is presented by the Summersell Fund in Southern History and the UA history department; it is free and open to the public.

Gallagher is the author or editor of many books on the Civil War era, including “The Confederate War,” and he has published scores of articles and essays. In addition, Gallagher has lectured widely and led many battlefield tours. He is known for bridging gaps between professional and general audiences, along with promoting battlefield preservation and stimulating popular interest in a range of war-related subjects. He is currently completing a biography of Gen. Jubal Early.

A graduate of Adams State College in Colorado, Gallagher received both a master’s degree and a doctorate from the University of Texas.
