UA’s College of Continuing Studies to Present Lead Exposure Safety Seminars

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Safe State program within The University of Alabama’s College of Continuing Studies will host a series of lead exposure safety seminars across Alabama from Sept. 7 through Sept. 26. Each seminar, which runs from 8 a.m. to noon, is free and open to the public.

The seminars are designed to help employers recognize, evaluate and control the hazards associated with the use of lead-containing materials. Excessive exposure to lead is a major cause of occupational illness across the country, including kidney disease, central nervous system disorders, anemia and headaches.

As a result, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has established the reduction of employee exposure to lead as a high priority by instituting a five-year, 15 percent reduction plan. Individuals attending the seminar will learn how to comply with OSHA regulations regarding lead and how to reduce or eliminate employee lead exposure.

The Safe State program at UA serves as the University’s link with Alabama’s businesses concerning environmental safety and health. Safe State programs provide consultation services either as telephone support or onsite assistance in areas including hazardous material and hazardous waste, medical wastes, environmental lead hazards, asbestos, and indoor air quality. Safe State’s research and instructional programs are the basis for the extensive service activities.
