“Making It In The Media” Career Fair Scheduled For Oct. 13 At UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Student organizations in The University of Alabama’s College of Communication and Information Sciences (C&IS) have joined together to sponsor the fifth annual “Making it in the Media” job fair, on Friday, Oct.13, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in the Ferguson Center on the UA campus.

“Whether you are a freshman or a graduate student, this will be one of the best opportunities you will have this year to get an internship, a job, or just to explore a field

of interest,” said Dr. E. Culpepper Clark, C&IS dean, in inviting UA students and students from about 100 other colleges and universities to the career fair.

Recruiters attending from across the country will seek permanent employees and interns in print and broadcast news, advertising, promotion, programming, corporate communications, graphics, photography, sales, media production, management training, public relations and new media.

“If you’ve ever wanted to interview with “The New York Times,” Gannett,

or any of the state’s media properties and agencies, the Job Fair is the place to be. With all the students and professionals who gather, it’s really more like a revival,” said Clark.

Among the companies represented at last fall’s fair, which drew more than 300 students and 45 recruiters, were “The New York Times,” the Associated Press, major newspapers and television stations in the South, and representatives from magazines and public relations and advertising agencies and departments in several states.

Graduate program directors from schools across the country have also been invited.

“We expect a large number and wide variety of recruiters representing

many different kinds and sizes of media,” said Dr. Ed Mullins, chairman of the journalism department and job fair coordinator. “We expect students with many different career goals to attend the fair. That means real opportunity for students to find a good job or internship and for recruiters to find good employees.”

“Each year we try to add a new feature to our job fair,” Mullins continued. “This year, when they are not interviewing, students can hear experts talk in small groups about the best way to present a portfolio, prepare a resume tape or learn how to prepare for an interview. Each of the disciplines in the College will be represented in these sidebar activities.”

The University’s student chapter of the Association of Black Journalists

began the fair in 1997. Other student organizations joined in the next year, including the Advertising Federation, the Radio and Television News Directors Association, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Society of News Design, Public Relations Council of Alabama, Public Relations Student Society of America, the Alabama Student Society for the Communication Arts, Alpha Epsilon Rho, and the College’s Student Executive Council.

Interviewees are advised to bring several copies of their resume and work samples. To register, students must fill out a form available in any of the departmental offices of the College of Communication & Information Sciences in Reese Phifer Hall.

“The University’s Career Center is very much a partner in planning and

producing this job fair,” Mullins said. “We could not do it without the help of such people as Melissa Medlin, Career Center counselor and, by the way, a graduate of the College of Communication.”
