Alabama Scholastic Press Association to Present Statewide High School Journalism Workshops

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama Scholastic Press Association (ASPA) will present high school journalism workshops to students at four college campuses across the state Sept. 18-21.

The daylong workshops will cost $10 per student or adviser, and ASPA will waive the registration fee for each journalism adviser who brings 10 or more students. Registration at each site begins at 8 a.m. and sessions end at 2 p.m.

Featured tracks will include yearbook (advanced and beginning), newspaper (advanced and beginning), literary magazine, photography and broadcast sessions. Broadcast sessions will only be available in Tuscaloosa and Huntsville.

Dates and locations of each workshop are as follows:

Monday, Sept. 18 University Center, University of Alabama in Huntsville

Tuesday, Sept. 19 Langdon Hall, Auburn University

Wednesday, Sept. 20 University Center, University of South Alabama

Thursday, Sept. 21 Ferguson Center, University of Alabama

Featured speakers include Laura Schaub, executive director of the Oklahoma Interscholastic Press Association and assistant professor of journalism at the University of Oklahoma. She previously taught and advised award-winning high school yearbooks and newspapers for 22 years. She is co-author of “Scholastic Yearbook Fundamentals” and contributing editor to the “Journalism Today” textbook series.

Merle Dieleman of Pleasant Valley, Iowa, will also teach sessions at each site. He recently retired after advising publications for 34 years. He is immediate past president of the Columbia Scholastic Press Adviser’s Association and former president of the Iowa High School Press Association. His honors include the CSPA Gold Key, the Iowa High School Journalism Teacher of the Year Award, and the 1996 Dow Jones National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year.

Bruce Watterson of Rome, Ga., will teach literary magazine sessions at each site. He is assistant vice president for public relations at Shorter College. Watterson has more than 20 years of experience as a public/private/university instructor and publications adviser. A popular workshop speaker in more than 30 states, Watterson is also contributing editor/writer for scholastic and journalistic publications and desktop journals.
