UA Engineering Professor Receives Hackney Leadership Award

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. Dr. Lloyd “Pete” Morley, professor and interim head of the department of electrical and computer engineering in The University of Alabama College of Engineering, has been selected as the 2000 recipient of the T. Morris Hackney Endowed Faculty Leadership Award.

Morley has held several key positions during his 15 years with the College of Engineering. He has been department head of two different departments and has served as an endowed chair.

He came to UA from Penn State University, where he was a professor of mining engineering and a faculty member for 14 years. He first joined UA as professor and head of the department of mineral engineering, a position he held for eight years. He then held the Drummond Endowed Chair of Mining Engineering.

Morley joined the department of electrical and computer engineering in 1996.

In addition to his academic leadership positions, he has been active in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), serving as vice president of publications activities and vice president of technical activities. He is currently one of two presidential candidates for the institute, the world’s largest technical society.

The award was created as a tribute to T. Morris Hackney for his leadership of the Citation Corporation and his impact on iron, steel and aluminum foundries throughout the United States. Mr. Hackney supported The University of Alabama with a $1 million endowment to provide student scholarships and fund renovation of UA’s metal casting laboratory.
