Alabama Public Radio Takes Numerous Honors in Regional Edward R. Murrow Competition

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama Public Radio (APR) at The University of Alabama recently collected five individual honors in the regional Edward R. Murrow Awards competition.

The Murrow Awards are among the broadcasting industry’s most coveted honors. The awards competition is conducted by the Radio Television News Directors Association (RTNDA). APR competes in the small market radio category, Region 4, which includes Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas.

The following includes each award winner, including the category, program title and reporter(s):

News Documentary — “Wild Alabama” (Sam Hendren)

Continuing Coverage — “School Lottery” (News Staff)

Sports Reporting — “Iron Bowl Hysteria” (Brett Tannehill)

Writing — “Letters from Vietnam” (Kerri Gentine)

Use of Sound — “GOP Fun” (Butler Cain)

“We’re very pleased to have this recognition, but our goal is to practice sound journalism,” said Butler Cain, APR news director. “We try to provide our listeners with the best news programming we can produce. If some of those reports are recognized with awards, that’s great.”

All five APR award-winning entries will now compete against other regional winners for national recognition. The RTNDA board of directors will meet the second weekend in June to judge the winners.
