TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ‚ The University of Alabama School of Law will pay tribute to African-American lawyers and judges in the Civil Rights Era during a day-long program focusing on the history of African Americans in the legal system Friday, Feb. 25.
The program, titled “A Century of Progress ‚ A Tribute to African-American Attorneys in Alabama,” will include sessions on the integration of law schools in Alabama, the history of Alabama’s Black Judiciary, the historic role of the Legal Defense Fund in Alabama and opportunities for African-American attorneys.
Speakers will include Alabama Supreme Court Justices John England and Ralph Cook; U.W. Clemon, chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama; State Sen. Charles D. Langford; and UA law professor Bryan Fair. Also participating will be attorneys J. Mason Davis Jr., Artur G. Davis, Anthony A. Joseph, Lisa J. Sharp and Kenneth O. Simon, all of Birmingham; J.L. Chestnut of Selma, and Fred D. Gray of Tuskegee. UA law student Vernetta Perkins will also be on the program.
