UA Graduate School Hosts Forum on Recruitment and Retention of Minority Graduate Students

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Graduate School will conduct a Forum on Recruitment and Retention of Minority Graduate Students Thursday, Feb. 10, from 2-5:30 p.m. in 30 Alston Hall on campus.

The main focus of the event is to provide graduate departments with information about current techniques, resources, and issues relating to the recruitment and retention of minority graduate students.

Following opening remarks by Dr. Nancy Barrett, UA provost and vice president for academic affairs, the keynote presentation will be conducted by Dr. Ansley Abraham, director of the Southern Regional Education Board’s (SREB) Doctoral Scholars Program. Abraham has directed studies at the SREB that covered several topics, including the perception of campus climate by minority and majority group students on campuses of historically black and predominantly white institutions. He has also completed two widely recognized studies on statewide assessment and placement standards and the need for developmental education for entering college students in 15 southern states.

After Abraham’s keynote address, several UA faculty members will discuss “Practical Department Techniques for Recruitment and Retention of Minority Graduate Students.”

Dr. Paul B. Mohr will conduct the final presentation of the forum, “State and National Resources for Recruitment and Retention of Minority Graduate Students.” He is currently director of special programs for the Alabama Commission on Higher Education (ACHE). Mohr’s activities include projects with the SREB Doctoral Scholars Program and numerous regional and national appointments related to higher education and the recruitment and retention of minority graduate students. Mohr previously was president of Talladega College, vice president of Norfolk State University, and dean of the College of Education at Florida A&M University.
