TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ‚ A University of Alabama College of Engineering professor has been awarded the 1999 Director’s Award by The American Foundrymen’s Society, an honor given annually to only one professor nationwide.
Dr. Doru M. Stefanescu, a professor of metallurgical and materials engineering and director of UA’s solidification laboratory, received the award during the Foundry Educational Foundation’s College Industry Conference held recently in Chicago.
The Foundry Educational Foundation works to strengthen the metal casting industry by supporting unique partnerships among students, educators and industry. It provides scholarships to students attending its member institutions, which includes The University of Alabama, a charter member.
Stefanescu’s materials research is internationally recognized. He has been the principal investigator in two experiments that have flown aboard the space shuttles.
In 1837, UA became the first university in the state to offer engineering classes and was one of the first five in the nation to do so. Today, the College of Engineering has approximately 1,800 students and more than 90 faculty.
