Top Students to Attend UA’s Capstone Scholars Day Jan. 15

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ‚ Some 1,000 outstanding high school students and their families are expected to take part in The University of Alabama’s second annual Capstone Scholars Day on Saturday, Jan. 15.

Each student who attends the by-invitation-only event and goes on to enroll at UA will receive a scholarship. Scholarships include UA’s “Tier I” awards which pay at least $25,000 over four years, “Tier II” awards which cover the full cost of tuition, and the President’s Cabinet Scholarships of $1,000 per year as well as individual College scholarships of varying amounts.

All students invited to the day-long program have been accepted to UA for the fall 2000 semester and have been invited based on their academic credentials and potential for success at UA.

Through last year’s Capstone Scholars Day program and other scholarship programs, more than 17 percent of entering freshmen in fall 1999 and 13 percent of all undergraduates at UA received merit scholarships for the 1999-2000 academic year.

Capstone Scholars Day 2000 will begin at 8 a.m. with an Information Fair at the Bryant Conference Center and will continue with separate agendas for students and their parents throughout the day. Student activities will include information sessions, a tour of the campus, and opportunities to hear about campus involvement from current students. In addition, students will break into groups of 10-12 to take part in team problem-solving exercises.

Parents will hear welcoming remarks from UA President Andrew Sorensen, tour campus and attend sessions led by current scholarship students and their parents; Dr. Sybil Todd, vice president for student affairs; Dr. Cathy Randall, director of the Computer Based Honors Program, and Dr. Lisa Harris, director of admissions and financial aid.

Students and parents will reconvene to hear closing remarks from Dr. Nancy Barrett, provost and vice president for academic affairs, at 5 p.m. at Foster Auditorium.
