Judge Calabresi to Deliver Hugo Black Lecture at UA Law School Thursday

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Guido Calabresi, judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals, Second Circuit, will present the Hugo L. Black Lecture at The University of Alabama School of Law on Thursday, Jan. 13, at 10 a.m. in the Bedsole Moot Courtroom at the school.

Calabresi will discuss “The Federal Courts in a Federal System: Current Problems, Plausible Cures.”

A former law clerk for Black, who served on the U.S. Supreme Court for more than 30 years, Calabresi was a Rhodes Scholar and received his master’s degree from Oxford University. He holds an L.L.B. from Yale University, a J.D. from the University of Bologna, and an L.L.D. from Princeton University.

Calabresi has taught at Yale Law School for many years and served as dean there from 1985-1994. Currently Sterling Professor Emeritus and Professional Lecturer at Yale, he has been a visiting professor at the University of Florence, Harvard Law School, and Cambridge University.

The UA School of Law established the Hugo L. Black lecture in 1996 to honor one of its most distinguished graduates. A member of the class of 1906, Black served on the U.S. Supreme Court from 1937-1971. He is remembered for his strong support of the Bill of Rights and landmark civil rights decisions of the Warren Court. Black also represented Alabama in the U.S. Senate from 1927-1937.

Memorabilia and papers from Black’s distinguished career are held in the Special Collections section of the UA Bounds Law Library. The library also houses a replica of Black’s study, containing more than 1,000 volumes from his personal library.

Professor Kathryn Abrams of Cornell Law School delivered the inaugural Black Lecture, followed by Harry T. Edwards, chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals, District of Columbia, and Professor Richard Delgado of the University of Colorado School of Law.
