The University of Alabama College of Community Health Sciences is hosting the annual Alice McLean Stewart Endowed Lecture for Addiction Education on Thursday, August 1. This endowment was stablished by Mrs. Alice McLean Stewart of Tuscaloosa, Alabama to promote medical student development and the education and treatment of addiction as it pertains to alcohol and other chemical abuse elements.

This year's speaker is Mark Ilgen, PhD, who is a Professor at the Department of Psychiatry and Director of Addiction Treatment Services at University of Michigan. 

Presentation: The Intersection of Pain and Addiction

Time: 7:30 AM – 8:30 AM

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe potential reasons for the overlap between chronic pain and addiction
  • Recognize potential role of psychological interventions in addressing pain and addiction
  • Identify evidence for the potential benefits and risks of cannabis to manage chronic pain
