BRIEF HISTORY OF UA

Desegregating the Tide

In 1969, basketball player Wendell Hudson became the first African-American to receive an athletic scholarship to UA. In 1970, the Crimson Tide football team was desegregated when Wilbur Jackson joined the team; Jackson actually didn't play until 1971, since freshmen were ineligible to play at the time.
