The Central Analytical Facility is a group of laboratories housing advanced materials characterization instrumentation. The Research Scientist is an experienced Ph.D. scientist with scholarly reputation in transmission electron microscopy, crystallography, and structural analysis of materials. This position is expected to serve as an "in house" expert in crystallography and transmission electron microscopy to internal and external individual researchers and research groups. The holder of the position is expected to interface with researchers in all fields of the physical sciences and engineering, including chemistry, geology, physics, metallurgical and materials engineering, chemical and biological engineering. The holder of the position may be expected to participate in, and where needed give advice to, a number of ongoing research efforts within The University of Alabama science community. In addition the Research Scientist is expected to establish and pursue original research with concentration on using the transmission electron microscope as the primary research tool. The holder of the position may be expected to act as TEM Facility Advisor and/or TEM Facility Manager of TEM instrument facilities within the Central Analytical Facility. The Research Scientist must possess a strong publication record. The Research Scientist will be expected to participate in securing external funding through partnerships with individual researchers and groups, and is also expected secure funding for his/her original research. Although the position does not have a teaching requirement, the Research Scientist may have the opportunity of participating in course instruction. In addition, it is anticipated that the holder will be active in keeping The University of Alabama transmission electron microscopy community informed of advances in techniques, research applications, and instrumentation, through seminars, web site, and other means. The Research Scientist is expected to maintain qualifications for appointment to the Graduate Faculty, may be expected to advise student users, and is strongly encouraged to support graduate and post-doctorate students through funded research activities. This position is expected to playa vital role in helping to establish The University of Alabama Central Analytical Facility as a regional center for excellence in micro- and nano-characterization of materials. The holder will be expected to develop a broad, active user base for the transmission electron microscopy facilities. Minimum Qualifications: Doctorate degree in the Physical Sciences, Engineering or related field, and at least ten years experience in crystallography and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Expertise in crystallography, especially in high resolution transmission electron microscopy studies of a wide range of materials. Extensive publication record. Preferred Qualifications: Work in a multi-disciplinary multi-user laboratory setting; Previous participation in research funding; Experience in advising graduate and/or post-doctoral students; Member of professional societies, and recipient of awards. This position is expected to serve as an "in house" expert in Auger electron / X-ray photo electron spectroscopy, and other electron or ion beam instrumentation, to internal and external individual researchers and research groups. The holder of the position may be expected to act as advisor and/or laboratory manager of Auger/XPS laboratory and other instrument laboratory within the Central Analytical Facility. The holder of the position will be expected to interface with researchers in all fields of the physical sciences and engineering, including chemistry, geology, physics, metallurgical and materials engineering, chemical engineering, and others. The holder of the position may be asked to participate in a number of ongoing research efforts within The University of Alabama materials science community.
