The Department of Anthropology offers one academic major for students interested in archaeology, cultural anthropology, physical anthropology, or anthropological linguistics.
Requirements for the anthropology major. The major requires 30 hours, including ANT 102, ANT 107, ANT 210, ANT 270, and 18 additional hours distributed as follows:
- 3 hours from the following cultural anthropology courses: ANT 436, ANT 440
- 3 hours from the following physical anthropology courses: ANT 311, ANT 471, ANT 473, ANT 475, or ANT 476
- 3 hours from the following archaeology courses: ANT 319, ANT 367, ANT 368, ANT 370, ANT 408, ANT 409, ANT 424, ANT 425, ANT 427, ANT 429, ANT 430, ANT 444, ANT 445, ANT 460, ANT 462, ANT 465, ANT 466, or ANT 467
- 6 elective hours chosen from ANT 300–ANT 499
- 3 elective hours chosen from ANT 100–ANT 499
A minimum of 12 hours at the 300 or 400 level must be earned on this campus.
Requirements for the anthropology minor. The minor requires 18 hours of anthropology courses, including 6 hours selected from ANT 100, ANT 102, ANT 107, ANT 210, and ANT 270, and 6 hours at the 300 or 400 level. A minimum of 6 hours at the 300 or 400 level must be earned on this campus.

2A maximum of 6 hours in any one department may be applied to the humanities, literature, and fine arts (HU, L, FA) and history and social and behavioral sciences (HI, SB) requirements.
3Six hours in courses designated W must be included in the junior or senior year. A minimum of 36 hours in 300- and 400-level courses, including 12 hours in the major and 6 hours in the minor, must be completed on this campus.
Graduate programs. The Department of Anthropology offers programs leading to the master of arts degree. The requirements for this degree are stated in the University of Alabama graduate catalog.
