Professor Ida M. Johnson, Interim Director
Office: 106-H ten Hoor Hall
The minor in African-American studies is an interdisciplinary program of study in African-American culture and the African-American experience. The objectives of the program are to foster a wider understanding of the struggles and achievements of African Americans, both in the context of the broad patterns of American life and within the global context of the African diaspora, and to provide an introduction to the methods appropriate to interdisciplinary cultural studies.
The minor in African-American studies requires 21 hours, including the following:
- AAST 201 Introduction to African-American Studies
- AAST 249 Afro-American Literature
- AAST 319 Nineteenth-Century Black History or AAST 320 Twentieth-Century Black History
- AAST 352 Social Inequality
- 9 hours of electives chosen from approved courses offered by departments throughout the University. For approved electives, see appropriate Schedule of Classes and Information Guide or contact the program director.
A minimum of 6 hours at the 300 or 400 level must be earned on this campus.
