DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND DANCE (TH) (DN)

A student may pursue a program of study in either theatre or dance.

Theatre (TH)

Requirements for the major in theatre. The theatre major requires 36 hours of coursework with the TH designation, including the following: TH 141, TH 120 or TH 220, TH 230, TH 290 (4 hours), TH 361, TH 451, TH 452, and TH 470. A minor in communication studies or English is recommended. A minimum of 12 hours at the 300 or 400 level must be earned on this campus.

Requirements for the minor in theatre. The theatre minor requires 21 hours of coursework with the TH designation, including TH 290 (2 hours) and 6 hours at the 300 or 400 level. A minimum of 6 hours at the 300 or 400 level must be earned on this campus.

The Department of Theatre and Dance offers various programs of study leading to the B.A. degree in theatre. These program areas include acting, musical theatre, theatre management and administration, scene design and technical production, and costume design and production. Please see the principal advisor in each of these areas for entrance requirements and a suggested course of study.

The highly motivated student who seeks to be well prepared for either the profession or graduate education may choose to take more hours in the major than the specified 36. This plan of action is highly desirable and strongly advised, but is not required. If more than 42 hours are accrued in the major, the student will be exceeding the 120-credit-hour requirement for graduation by the number of hours taken over the single subject 42-credit-hour limit.

¹A maximum of 6 hours in any one department may be applied to the humanities, literature, and fine arts (HU, L, FA) and history and social and behavioral sciences (HI, SB) requirements.
²Six hours in courses designated W must be included in the junior or senior year. A minimum of 36 hours in 300- and 400-level courses, including 12 hours in the major and 6 hours in the minor, must be completed on this campus.
³MATH course number is determined by placement. MATH 110 or higher is required.

Dance (DN)

Requirements for the major in dance. Admission to the dance major is by audition. For information on the audition process contact The University of Alabama, Professor Edie Barnes, Department of Theatre and Dance, Box 870239, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0239 or visit the Department of Theatre and Dance website, www.as.ua.edu/theatre. The dance major requires 36 hours including the following: DN 240, DN 251, DN 265, DN 321, DN 340, DN 400, DN 403, DN 440, DN 470, DN 471, and at least 6 hours of dance technique, 3 of which must be at the 300 or 400 level. A minimum of 12 hours at the 300 or 400 level must be earned on this campus. Each dance major must reach a proficiency level of 300 in his or her major technique (modern or ballet) and 200 in his or her secondary technique (modern, ballet, or jazz) before graduation. Dance majors must register for dance technique each semester and participate in all auditions.

Graduate programs. The Department of Theatre and Dance offers programs leading to the master of fine arts degree in theatre. The requirements for the degree are stated in the University of Alabama graduate catalog.
