STUDENT-DESIGNED PROGRAMS

Ann W. Webb, Director of Student Services
Office: 200 Clark Hall

For students in the College of Arts and Sciences, there are three types of student-designed programs of study: the individualized major, which is usually coupled with a disciplinary minor; the individualized minor, which is usually coupled with a disciplinary major; and the individualized program, which combines the major and minor.

All three originate with a student's interest in issues or questions that cross disciplinary lines. All three programs include courses in at least two disciplines and integrative courses or experiences. Interested students are encouraged to discuss these programs with the College's director of student services.

Proposals are developed by students in consultation with faculty, approved by faculty advisors, and submitted to the director of student services for approval by the College's Committee on Instruction. Students are encouraged to consider these programs early in their University careers. Proposals for the individualized major and minor should be submitted prior to the completion of 80 hours of study, but proposals for individualized programs should be submitted even earlier. Students may submit proposals at any time during the year, but the Committee on Instruction meets to approve proposals only during the fall and spring semesters.
