Requirements for the major and minor in history are outlined below. The Department of History requires regular advising and consultation, particularly for its majors to ensure that courses are selected in accordance with each student's interests and level of development and with departmental, college, and University requirements, including the core curriculum.
Requirements for the major in history. The history major requires 36 hours, distributed as follows:
- 6 hours in Western civilization: HY 101 (or HY 105 or HY 110) and HY 102 (or HY 106)
- 6 hours in American civilization: HY 203 (or HY 205) and HY 204 (or HY 206)
- 3 hours in United States history: HY 225, HY 226, HY 295, HY 312, HY 313, HY 314, HY 315, HY 318, HY 319, HY 320, HY 323, HY 324, HY 325, HY 326, HY 330, HY 331, HY 337, HY 341, HY 392, HY 408, HY 409, HY 413, HY 416, HY 417, HY 421, HY 422, HY 423, HY 428, HY 429, HY 468, HY 469, or HY 480
- 3 hours in British or European history: HY 235, HY 236, HY 247, HY 248, HY 289, HY 321, HY 353, HY 355, HY 357, HY 358, HY 361, HY 362, HY 385, HY 386, HY 392, HY 393, HY 442, HY 443, HY 444, HY 446, HY 447, HY 450, HY 490, HY 491, HY 493, HY 494, or HY 495
- 3 hours in Asian or Latin American history: HY 237, HY 238, HY 243, HY 244, HY 277, HY 306, HY 309, HY 310, HY 384, HY 401, HY 402, HY 403, HY 404, HY 470, HY 471, HY 472, HY 473, HY 474, or HY 475
At least 18 hours must be in courses numbered above 299 (this requirement can be satisfied by courses that also fulfill the requirements in categories above). A minimum of 18 hours at the 300 or 400 level must be earned on this campus.
Requirements for the minor in history. The history minor requires 21 hours, including HY 101 (or HY 105 or HY 110) and HY 102 (or HY 106) and 9 hours in HY courses numbered 300 and above, which must be earned on this campus.

1A maximum of 6 hours in any one department may be applied to the humanities, literature, and fine arts (HU, L, FA) and history and social and behavioral sciences (HI, SB) requirements.
2Six hours in courses designated W must be included in the junior or senior year. A minimum of 36 hours in 300- and 400-level courses, including 18 hours in the major and 6 hours in the minor, must be completed on this campus.
3MATH course number is determined by placement. MATH 110 or higher is required.
Honors program in history. The history honors program is open to history majors who have a 3.0 overall GPA, a 3.3 GPA in history, and at least 12 hours of history courses completed. The program requires 9 hours of honors work, including HY 399 History Honors Colloquium (usually taken in the junior year) and a 6-hour thesis (HY 498 and HY 499) completed (usually in the senior year) under the direction of a tenured or tenure-track member of the department. Graduating with honors in history requires a 3.0 overall GPA, a 3.3 GPA in history, and satisfactory completion of a thesis judged to merit an honors designation.
Graduate programs. The Department of History offers programs leading to the master of arts and the doctor of philosophy degrees. The requirements for these degrees are stated in the University of Alabama graduate catalog. The Ph.D. degree is offered in United States history and history of the South, modern British and European history, Latin American history, and military and naval history.
