FACILITIES AND SERVICES
During the 1990s, the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration completed a major building program designed to expand and modernize its teaching and research facilities. Mary Hewell Alston Hall,
which was completed in 1991, houses faculty and administrative offices, seminar rooms, and four technologically innovative classrooms. The Angelo Bruno Business Library and Sloan Y. Bashinsky Sr. Computer Center
was occupied in January 1994. This integrated business-information center includes the expanded business library, three hands-on computer classrooms, and open computer labs for business students.
which was closed for more than a year as extensive renovations were made, reopened in January 1994. It now houses 32 classrooms, including two television studios that allow the College to offer distance-learning opportunities. In 2001, a state-of-the-art, 16-workstation, multimedia e-commerce facility was opened. We have also opened a 16-seat Special Projects Lab. Bidgood Hall also includes the research and service centers affiliated with the College, as well as offices and group-study facilities for business graduate students.

Angelo Bruno Business Library
The state-of-the-art Angelo Bruno Business Library serves the business information needs of The University of Alabama and, in particular, the students and faculty of the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration (C&BA) and the Manderson Graduate School of Business. The library serves over 300,000 visitors each year, which represents repeated use by C&BA students, faculty, staff, and others from the University community and beyond. The 64,000-square-foot facility is conveniently located on Stadium Drive within the C&BA complex and also houses the College's Sloan Y. Bashinsky Sr. Computer Center. Combining business library services and business computer laboratory services in the same facility provides seamless access to information services for business students.
The library's resources comprise about 180,000 volumes, including hundreds of business periodicals and a wide variety of online computer databases. The highly computer-networked environment of the Bruno Library provides enhanced access to electronic information sources. Library faculty and staff offer users specialized information assistance and services, and individualized and class instruction in library research and effective use of library databases. Special features include an electronic library instruction classroom and several types of seating and study accommodations, including group study rooms for team assignments. The Bruno Library Information Network and the Bruno Web site provide convenient access to library resources, including the library catalog, the World Wide Web, and commercial databases.
The Bruno Library's books, journals, special collections, and commercial databases offer excellent support of the C&BA teaching and research fields in business, economics, finance, accounting, information systems and statistics. Full-text access to business-related periodicals and newspapers is available through such databases as ABI/Inform, Dow Jones Interactive, and LEXIS-NEXIS. Extensive worldwide data on publicly traded securities of all kinds is available from BLOOMBERG Financial Markets and News. Other resources provide coverage of important topics such as international business, tax regulations and cases, and current trends and case law in labor and human resources. The Bruno Library's extensive collection of current and historical corporate annual reports has received national recognition.
The Angelo Bruno Business Library provides convenient access to information resources through traditional as well as technologically advanced means. User service is a major emphasis. Our goals are to tailor our collections and services to meet the primary needs of C&BA undergraduate and graduate students and faculty to deliver the best possible mix of traditional and technologically advanced library services. Sloan Y. Bashinsky Sr. Computer Center
The Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration established its first microcomputer center in 1984 to provide personal computing equipment and support for all C&BA students and faculty. Completed in 1994, the Sloan Y. Bashinsky Sr. Computer Center now offers C&BA students and faculty three state-of-the-art 40-workstation multimedia classrooms; 60 open lab workstations; and 20 graduate student workstations. Connected to a network for software, electronic mail, and laser printer services, these 200 workstations provide faculty with state-of-the-art instructional resources to teach the most advanced microcomputer-based business applications in use by businesses today. C&BA students who are currently enrolled in at least one business course are provided with full Internet capabilities, including personal Internet addresses and Web pages.
The Sloan Y. Bashinsky Sr. Computer Center is open more than 98 hours per week. Assistance for students is available seven days a week, including evenings and weekends. The center is staffed by students who gain technical experience with current networking, hardware, and software tools. An average of 700 users each day takes advantage of this facility, which serves a total of about 6,200 students each semester.

A. H. Bean Undergraduate Student Services Center
The Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration places great emphasis on academic and career planning for all of its students. It views the advising process as essential to the student's college experience and success.
All C&BA students will receive assistance with course selection, course sequencing, and academic planning in the A. H. Bean Undergraduate Student Services Center, located in 10 Bidgood Hall. Students seeking career counseling or assistance with vocational choice may consult C&BA faculty in their area of interest.
The A. H. Bean Undergraduate Student Services Center provides a team of advisers to assist in arranging programs of study and to counsel students when problems arise. Additionally, the advisers keep students aware of the many University services designed to ensure a student's success. Each student is encouraged to make an appointment with an adviser in the A. H. Bean Undergraduate Student Services Center each semester.
Those students who are eligible for admission to C&BA's upper division and ready to declare majors may do so during the appointed time. Students who have been admitted to the upper division but are not yet ready to declare majors are classified as "CBUD" (undesignated business) students. Such a student remains CBUD until choosing a major.
Students are expected to take an active role in the advising process. They should consult the advisers in the A. H. Bean Undergraduate Student Services Center on all matters related to their academic plans and work currently in progress. Students hold the ultimate responsibility for selection of courses that enable them to make reasonable progress toward their degrees.
C&BA Internship Program
The College operates an internship program that offers students opportunities to combine classroom education with practical learning experience. The internship program represents a cooperative effort between managers from business, government, and nonprofit organizations and C&BA. The program is open to upper-division students who have grade point averages of 2.5 or higher. Internships carry 3 hours of college credit and are graded on a pass/fail basis. Local and regional internships are scheduled during fall and spring semesters and the summer session. Center for Business and Economic Research
The Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER) is Alabama's central reservoir for business, economic, and demographic data. Since its creation in 1930, CBER has engaged in research programs to promote economic development in the state, while continuously expanding and refining its broad base of socioeconomic information and statistics from federal, state, local, and private sources. Staff at the center respond to queries for specific business, economic, or demographic information concerning Alabama, the region, and the nation. Additionally, the findings of special projects initiated by CBER, and findings from ongoing programs, are frequently available to meet information needs.
The Alabama State Data Center, housed within CBER, provides an important link with the U.S. Bureau of the Census. The data center maintains all census publications for the state of Alabama and many surrounding states. The data center is also equipped to extract many items that would not otherwise be available from machine-readable sources. CBER has engaged in population research for more than 25 years, and as demand for detailed demographic data continues to rise, this experience makes CBER the leader in demographic work in Alabama.
For over 20 years, CBER has used its own econometric model of the state to forecast output, employment, wages, and personal income by sector. Forecasts from the annual model are published in the Alabama Economic Outlook
. Quarterly forecast updates are posted on the center's Web site. The center hosts an annual Economic Outlook Conference in January.
The center has an active publications program that includes Alabama Business
, a free newsletter published since 1930, and the Economic Abstract of Alabama
, a reference book of historical and current socioeconomic data.
The Center for Business and Economic Research responds to requests for information from state and local government agencies, chambers of commerce, public and private researchers, industrial organizations, news media, and private citizens, as well as faculty and students. Additionally, CBER originates independent research projects and seeks contracts and grants for research. It also provides opportunity and incentive for business and economic research by faculty and graduate students.

Small Business Development Center
The Small Business Development Center (SBDC), a service arm of the College for 19 years, works to improve the economy and quality of life of West Alabama by developing new small businesses and helping existing businesses expand. Assisting 200 to 300 new or existing businesses each year, SBDC provides entrepreneurs with education and training opportunities that cover a wide range of business topics.
Specifically, SBDC is available to assist new or existing firms in devising business plans, assessing new markets, answering basic start-up questions, and addressing other needs. Counseling, workshop training, and information transfer form the core of SBDC activities. A special emphasis of the Small Business Development Center continues to be procurement assistance, which takes the form of computer-generated bid notifications forwarded to clients; bid package preparation; bonding; pricing; and quality assurance.
SBDC's location within the College encourages maximum benefit from the College's extensive business resources. Faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, library holdings, and other College units (for example, the Center for Business and Economic Research) support SBDC's service mission.
William R. Bennett Alabama International Trade Center
The Alabama International Trade Center (AITC), founded in the mid-1970s by C&BA's Dr. William R. Bennett, recently completed its 21st year of operation and service. AITC utilizes University staff, faculty, and students to increase international trade in Alabama and to expand the state's economy. It serves more than 500 businesses throughout Alabama each year with foreign market research, counseling, and training. The center also works in partnership with many federal, state, and local economic development agencies to complete international trade projects for Alabama industry. In addition, AITC continues to serve as a practical training ground for UA students interested in careers in international business through its internship and graduate assistantship programs.
Alabama Productivity Center
The Alabama Productivity Center is a vehicle for improving the productivity and quality of manufacturing and service firms throughout the state. A primary activity of the center is the coordination of applied research projects in which University faculty and students work jointly with a company's management and labor to resolve specific production, marketing, or other operational problems. These projects have simultaneously a research/educational focus and a real-world impact. Other activities of the Productivity Center include basic research in productivity analysis and improvement technology, technology transfer, and administration of the Alabama Quality Award. The center offers research assistantships for graduate students.
Enterprise Integration Lab (EIL)
The mission of the Enterprise Integration Lab is to aid organizations to improve their effectiveness through seamless integration of business activities using information technology (IT). Confronted with global market demands and evolving IT, EIL's mission is to develop business best practices for sharing, managing, controlling, and coordinating business data, work practices, and networks. To accomplish this goal, EIL performs basic research to expand the fundamental knowledge related to developing complex management information systems, applied research to examine how to align theoretical concepts with constraints of the real world, business outreach to aid business in applying accepted best practices, and education to transfer best practices using state-of-the-art techniques and methods.
Hess Institute for Retailing Development
The Hess Institute for Retailing Development is endowed by a gift from Parisian Inc. to serve the retailing community through education and research. The institute brings together academicians, students, and practitioners so that each will benefit through interaction and the exchange of ideas. The institute supports the annual Retailing Day activities and faculty teaching and research in retailing.
Human Resources Institute (HRI)
The Human Resources Institute was organized in January 1972 as a unit of the College. Through the Human Resources Institute, the University seeks to contribute to the development, improvement, and effective use of human resources in the state, region, and nation. The mechanisms used to accomplish this goal include both individual and contract research; training programs for labor, management, and government groups; and technical assistance for private- and public-sector organizations. C&BA Satellite Career Center
The Satellite Career Center is an extension of the University's Career Center. Located in Bidgood Hall, the Satellite Center allows the Career Center to better serve the needs of business students, faculty, and alumni.
C&BA students and alumni of the College are provided with "one-stop career services"exclusively targeting business majors. Students are encouraged to work with the C&BA Satellite Career Center staff to get resumés and other career-related correspondence critiqued, to sign up for on-campus interviews, to take career assessments, and to discuss job-related opportunities.
