The Latin American Studies Program is an interdisciplinary program focusing on Latin America. A student in the College of Arts and Sciences may major or minor in Latin American studies.
Courses in the field of Latin American studies are offered in anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, sociology, law, modern languages, and education. Credit may also be earned through the annual Interim term course in Yucatan, Mexico, or in other summer term abroad programs in a Spanish-speaking country.
Requirements for the major in Latin American studies. The major in Latin American studies requires 30 hours, including
LAS 396 Seminar in Latin American Studies (3 hours); 15 hours selected from
ANT 413,
EC 442,
GY 3435 or
GY 345,
HY 237,
HY 238, and
PSC 332; and 12 hours selected from more than 50 Latin American-related courses offered on campus. A minimum of 12 hours at the 300 or 400 level must be earned on this campus. In addition, Latin American studies majors must complete the requirements for the minor in Spanish.
Requirements for the minor in Latin American studies. The minor in Latin American studies requires 18 hours of coursework, including 3 hours in
LAS 396 Seminar in Latin American Studies and 3 hours in a 300- or 400-level Latin American content course. A minimum of 6 hours at the 300 or 400 level must be earned on this campus.
Students who major or minor in Latin American studies are urged to apply for the International Honors Program, and avail themselves of study abroad opportunities.

Graduate programs. The Latin American Studies Program offers the master of arts in Latin American studies with major concentrations in anthropology, economics, history, political science, and Spanish. Certain other departments provide for a focus and/or thesis work on Latin American topics. Interested students should consult the director of the Latin American Studies Program.
