Requirements for the major and minor in history are outlined below. The Department of History strongly recommends frequent advising and consultation, particularly for its majors, to ensure that courses are selected in accordance with each student's interests and level of development and with departmental, college, and University requirements, including the core curriculum.
Requirements for the major in history. The history major requires 36 hours, distributed as follows:
- 6 hours in Western civilization: HY 101 (or HY 105 or HY 110) and HY 102 (or HY 106)
- 6 hours in American civilization: HY 203 (or HY 205) and HY 204 (or HY 206)
- 3 hours in United States history: HY 225, HY 226, HY 228,

At least 18 hours must be in courses numbered above 299 (this requirement can be satisfied by courses that also fulfill the requirements in categories above). A minimum of 18 hours at the 300 or 400 level must be earned on this campus.
Requirements for the minor in history. The history minor requires 21 hours, including

A major or minor in history may be applied toward the Alabama Class B Secondary Professional Teaching Certificate (see

Graduate programs. The Department of History offers programs leading to the master of arts and the doctor of philosophy degrees. The requirements for these degrees are stated in the University of Alabama graduate catalog.
