[College of Arts and Sciences]DEPARTMENT OF ART (ART) (ARH)
Professor William Dooley, Chairperson
Office: 103 Garland Hall
The Department of Art offers courses of study in studio art and in the history and theory of art. These courses are designed to develop the intellect, the perception, and the creative powers while enabling a student to participate in art's great legacy to world culture. One of the department's purposes is the education and training of the serious professional artist. Another purpose is self-enrichment for the general student. Although the object of study in this department is not primarily vocational, the student will acquire knowledge and skills that may lead to employment in art-related fields, such as teaching, museum or gallery operation, arts administration, art librarianship, graphic communication, and design. Members of the department will counsel students seeking advice about career opportunities in art.
The Department of Art offers undergraduate programs leading to the bachelor of arts degree and the bachelor of fine arts degree in studio art and the bachelor of arts degree in art history. An option in arts administration may be taken with the bachelor of arts degree in either studio art or art history. The Department of Art also offers graduate programs leading to the master of arts degree in studio art and art history, and the master of fine arts degree in studio art (see the University of Alabama graduate catalog).
The bachelor of arts degree program is flexible, allowing a student to fulfill the requirements for a major in art and a minor outside the field of art. The bachelor of fine arts degree is designed for the more professionally minded student. A student in this program will take fewer courses outside the field of art while fulfilling the requirements for the Standard Curriculum of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Arts administration option. This option consists of a 42-hour major in studio art or art history; an approved Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration minor in management, marketing, or general business; and ancillary requirements in music and theatre, specifically
MUS 121,
MUS 490, and
TH 472. The major must be completed according to the departmental requirements above.
Bachelor of fine arts (B.F.A.). The bachelor of fine arts (B.F.A.) degree is the professional degree for the artist; it is also the foundation for the master's program in studio art. The B.F.A. degree program permits a student to take a greater number of concentrations in studio art and art history. The program incorporates both a major and minor in the field of art. Students who wish to fulfill the requirements for the B.F.A. in eight semesters must enter the program at the beginning of the freshman year; full admission to the program is granted only upon successful completion of the
B.F.A. review.
The B.F.A. review is to be scheduled after a minimum of a combined 18 hours of foundations courses in studio (
ART 110,
ART 210,
ART 130,
ART 131) and art history (
ARH 252,
ARH 253, or
ARH 254). Introductory studio discipline courses (
ART 212,
ART 214,
ART 216,
ART 218,
ART 220,
ART 222) may also be taken prior to the B.F.A. review; however, the review should be conducted prior to advancement into upper-level studio classes.
The B.F.A. degree requires 81 hours in the Department of Art. The requirements of the
foundations core make up 12 of those hours:
ART 110,
ART 130,
ART 131, and
ART 210. Additional requirements are 12 hours of introductory courses (3 hours each in four studio areas
*); 15 hours in a major studio area and 9 hours in a minor studio area, taken in sequence above the introductory level; 15 hours of studio art and/or art history electives; and 18 hours of art history, including 3 hours selected from
ARH 252,
ARH 253, or
ARH 254;
ARH 381; and
ARH 385.
B.F.A. majors are encouraged to take ART 302, ART 310, ART 311, ARH 381, and ARH 385.
