AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES MINOR (AAST)

The minor in African-American studies is an interdisciplinary program of study in African-American culture and the African-American experience. The objectives of the program are to foster a wider understanding of the struggles and achievements of African Americans, both in the context of the broad patterns of American life and within the global context of the African diaspora, and to provide an introduction to the methods appropriate to interdisciplinary cultural studies.
The minor in African-American studies requires 21 hours, including the following:
- AAST 201 Introduction to African-American Studies
- EN 249 Afro-American Literature
- HY 320 Twentieth-Century Black History or HY 319 Nineteenth-Century Black History
- SOC 352 Social Inequality
- 9 hours of electives chosen from approved courses offered by departments throughout the University (for example, AMS 301 African-American Experience, AMS 302 The Black Church, SW 351 Oppression and Social Injustice, CJ 303 Racial Minorities, Criminality, and Social Justice)
