The Capstone of Higher Education

The University of Alabama will soon celebrate its 200th anniversary.

It all started in 1818,when the Congress of the United States set aside land to establish a seminary of learning in the state.

The following year when Alabama became a state, Congress donated more land. One of the first acts of the newly formed legislature was to name the seminary of learning "The University of Alabama." The University opened its doors in 1831 with forty students.

In 1912, after 100 years of outstanding teaching, research and service, President George Denny proclaimed that The University of Alabama is "The Capstone of Higher Education".

Today, our students, faculty, staff, and alumni continue to impact the world through groundbreaking research, transformative economic development and a truly generous spirit of community service.

The University of Alabama... The Capstone of Higher Education.
